Thirty-five years ago, our first certification exam was administered. Today, the Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality® (CPHQ) credential has become the gold standard and a certification that has stood the test of time. You’ll find nearly 11,000 active CPHQs around the world. And, the momentum is strong. In fact, the CPHQ has experienced 50% growth in the last four years.
As a CPHQ, I can speak first-hand of the career advantage the designation has given me. I sought out this certification when I made the transition from patient care to healthcare quality in managed care. Like today’s healthcare environment, the industry was rapidly evolving. There were no formal education opportunities. It truly was a “learn as you go” situation. Studying for the CPHQ exam, and even today as I maintain my certification, I know I'm keeping pace with quality standards and advancements. Plus, having these credentials after my name has provided me opportunities to climb the career ladder. I’m sure others have similar experiences.
This certification continues to be my professional beacon for improvement. For my fellow CPHQs, I applaud you and ask you to be an ambassador of this gold standard designation. Encourage your peers or team to earn the CPHQ. NAHQ has a toolkit with templates for e-mail and social media messages to customize.
For those who are thinking about getting the CPHQ, go for it! The CPHQ demonstrates to your employer, organizational leaders, and team that you have the specific skill set and knowledge that can make a difference in outcomes and improvement. If you have questions about the certification, I recommend the following:
- Register for NAHQ’s CPHQ Info Session on June 11 from noon-1 pm CT
- Review the CPHQ FAQs on the NAHQ website
- Talk with someone you know who has the CPHQ
The healthcare environment is changing - what has stayed the same is the need for quality, and a certification to prove it. I look forward to welcoming you to the CPHQ ranks very soon!
