Georgetown University and NAHQ recognize a coordinated, competent workforce begins in the classroom. The two entities have collaborated to hardwire content aligned with NAHQ’s Healthcare Quality Competency Framework into Georgetown’s Executive Master’s in Clinical Quality, Safety and Leadership. Recently, Georgetown University Executive Master’s student, Nicole King, MD, was featured in a podcast, “Turn 2020 Into an Opportunity by Changing Your Mindset.”

Dr. King is a critical care anesthesiologist in the UC Department of Anesthesiology.

She completed her MD degree at the St. Louis University School of Medicine, her anesthesiology residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA, and her critical care fellowship at Vanderbilt University. While in the Navy, Dr. King planned, implemented, and maintained a respiratory depression monitoring program for the first time in Navy Medicine’s history and also served as the physician director of the rapid response team at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, she volunteered for over a month as an intensivist in the COVID Surge ICUs at NYP/Columbia. Since completing her service in NYC, she has given grand rounds presentations at multiple institutions across the country, detailing her experiences in the NYP COVID ICU.

Dr. King’s main clinical interests include extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), the utilization of echocardiography at the bedside of critically ill patients, high-risk obstetrical care, and the utilization of processes and procedures that improve the quality and safety of care for patients who are most at risk of medical errors. Dr. King is now a key member of the Critical Care Anesthesiology Team (CCAT) that has provided ECMO support to over 30 patients and provided a survival rate almost twice that of the international average. She is also leading a multi-disciplinary team that will launch a high-fidelity simulation and training program on the obstetrical ward, which aims to reduce the high rate of morbidity and mortality of childbirth in the United States due to post-partum hemorrhage.

A passionate advocate for both patients and health care providers, Dr. King is an active blog writer and participant in discussion panels and podcasts on a wide variety of medical topics.

Tune into her podcast, “Turn 2020 Into an Opportunity by Changing Your Mindset”.
