Reflecting on a year of progress and looking ahead to a future of healthcare excellence

As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on a year filled with incredible achievements for NAHQ and significant advances for healthcare Quality and patient safety. I am also taking the opportunity to look forward, at the exciting potential of the year ahead.

A year of great progress

This year, we have all witnessed the power of Quality & Safety, not just as a profession and a discipline but as a driving force for healthcare improvement. Some highlights I invite you to join me in celebrating are:

  • Making the case for Quality: NAHQ pioneered the first-ever campaign designed to promote the entire category of Quality. This bold, attention-getting campaign, ‘the Power of Q,’ put Quality front-and-center, showing how it is a critical component of driving healthcare outcomes at the bedside, in the boardroom and everywhere in between.
  • Forging powerful alliances: NAHQ’s new strategic alliance with The Joint Commission created waves of excitement throughout the industry and sent a strong message from two leading organizations about the importance of aligning to industry-standard competencies and training and coordinating the workforce aligned to that standard.
  • Increasing education opportunities: The launch of NAHQ Micro-Credentials, a portfolio of courses delving deeper into each of the domains of the Healthcare Quality Competency Framework, expands opportunities for learning, enabling CPHQs to build on their knowledge and others a focused resource for practical application.
  • Demonstrating ROI of Quality: We are fortunate to have partnered with visionary leaders at healthcare organizations who embraced NAHQ solutions. This year, the data from these programs continues to provide proof – our programs deliver outcomes from cost savings to employee engagement and improved patient safety.
  • Accepting awards: Our hard work has been recognized with two huge industry wins. NAHQ was awarded Modern Healthcare’s new Best in Business award as the sole honoree in the association category. Additionally, for the second year in a row, our own CEO Stephanie Mercado was named one of Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. Congratulations Stephanie!

Exciting advances ahead

As we move into 2025, I am energized about the possibilities for all we can continue to accomplish toward our shared goal of achieving high-quality, safe patient care for all. And I am very pleased to announce that I will have the honor of serving as the president of the NAHQ Board of Director’s through next year.

The board recently approved a new strategic plan that marks a pivotal evolution in our organization’s focus and governance. NAHQ will continue to support the profession of healthcare Quality while broadening our scope to encompass the entire discipline.

To support this expansion, we will add two more seats to our board to garner representation from a wide range of expertise. To ensure a smooth transition to a larger board, I will remain in place next year to help preserve important historical knowledge.

2025 also marks the 40th Anniversary of the CPHQ! You will be seeing stories that honor our more than 40,000 CPHQ-certified professionals who have engaged with NAHQ over these past four decades.

In closing, I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has joined NAHQ in our endeavor to advance Quality and advance healthcare. Whether you are a NAHQ member, a healthcare leader, or just ‘Quality Curious’ and eager to learn more, the journey next year promises to be filled with even more exciting advances.

As we embrace the holiday season, I hope you find time to rest, recharge, and celebrate with loved ones. I wish you a joyous holiday season and look forward to a New Year of progress.
