Working within a large safety net health system that serves the diverse and vulnerable populations of Harris County has given me extensive experience in the safe, compliant, and patient centered use of restraints. As a former emergency center nurse, I have frequently managed high acuity crisis situations where restraint or seclusion needs were immediate and carried significant risk for patient harm if not executed and monitored appropriately. These experiences have shaped my understanding of the gaps that occur when escalation is not paired with timely assessment, coordinated teamwork, and clear clinical protocols. In my current quality role, I help lead efforts to standardize restraint practices across the system in alignment with regulatory requirements and a patient focused, harm prevention approach. This dual background, frontline crisis management and system level quality improvement, uniquely positions me to speak to both the practical challenges and the operational strategies needed to advance safe, compliant, and restraint free care.
