Sir Winston Churchill was quoted as saying: “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” I share those inspirational words during National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 16-22, 2023, because life often contradicts the way we make a living. Finding a way to give our time and talents through volunteer work provides a unique balance and can help each of us get the most out of life.

Over the course of my career, my volunteer participation and professional affiliations have been incredibly fulfilling. They have filled my heart and soul with gratitude for what I am able to share with others. I am happy to say that my volunteer work with NAHQ led to me serving as NAHQ’s 2023 president. It is so satisfying to know I am an integral part of initiatives that are moving the needle toward better quality and less cost in our healthcare organizations.

At NAHQ, we have more than 100 active volunteers who give back to NAHQ in unique ways. A big “thank you” to all for their hard work and dedication! I also want to send a special note of thanks to our board of directors for their volunteerism, dedication to sharing their expertise, and ongoing commitment to bettering health outcomes.

That includes:

  • President Elect: Patricia Resnik, MJ, MBA, RRT, FACHE, CPHQ, CHC, CHPC
  • Immediate Past President: Emmett T. Ervin, MPA, CPHQ
  • Secretary Treasurer: Patricia Kirkpatrick, MJ, RN, CPHQ
  • Intelligence & Profession Advancement Advisory Council Chair: Esther Emard, RN, MSN, MSLIR, CPHQ
  • Individual Strategic Advisory Council Chair: April Taylor, FACHE, CMQ/OE, CLSSBB, CPPS, CPHQ
  • Academic Strategic Advisory Council Chair: Deirdre McCaughey, PhD, MBA, PT
  • Organizational Strategic Advisory Council Chair: Anthony Warmuth, MPA, FACHE, CPHQ, CPPS

Of course, NAHQ’s past presidents served the association well and many continue to devote themselves to the mission of preparing a coordinated, competent workforce to lead and advance healthcare quality across the healthcare continuum.

For these healthcare professionals listed, volunteering has provided a sense of accomplishment, pride, and identity. I recommend that anyone working in healthcare quality and safety look to NAHQ as a home for your activities. It is easy to get involved! Our annual call for volunteers will open in the third quarter of this year. Check NAHQ.org for details.

Anyone can start giving back! I know that collaborating with NAHQ, volunteering over the years, and serving as president have added much to my career journey. I invite you to join our community of engagement during this volunteer awareness week.
