Putting Quality on the map (and in every aspect of healthcare operations)

I know everyone reading this column is working hard to advance Quality & Safety. And I know that sometimes it can feel difficult. Not everyone yet sees the critical role Quality can play in addressing healthcare’s challenges or understands that no matter what position they have in healthcare, they play an important role in Quality & Safety. As Quality professionals, we still need to make the case.

That’s why I’m so excited about the new advertising campaign NAHQ just launched – The Power of Q. This campaign was created to support our efforts as Quality professionals in making the case by doing something that has never been done before - raise awareness of the ‘big’ role Quality plays in achieving our most important healthcare objectives. When I say ‘big’ I mean it literally. These eye-catching ads place a giant letter Q right in the middle of settings across healthcare where it’s important to prioritize Quality – the operating room, diagnostic services such as MRIs, and in the boardroom.

I love how this campaign helps us explain the concept of Quality as a discipline so powerfully. “More than just compliance, more than a role or department, Quality is a shared responsibility that has the power to transform the very system we’re all working so hard to make better.”

I think it shows how every person who is caring for patients or supporting the care of patients in any way – from the information desk to ancillary departments, volunteers, clinicians, executives, the C-Suite and Board – has an important role in driving Quality throughout the organization.

With this new campaign, NAHQ has laid the foundation for the message we all want to deliver. Now, it’s up to us to help spread the important message that, “When Quality is on the table – better care, patient safety and improved financial performance are too.”

You’ll find the ads in the print and digital issues of leading healthcare publications and across their websites. You’ll see it on the homepage of NAHQ and on NAHQ’s social networks. Here are a few ways that you can help spread the word and be a Quality champion:

  • Share The Power of Q on social: Follow NAHQ on LinkedIn and Facebook and share their posts with the campaign to tell your peers and leaders that you think Quality is critical. Add your thoughts and comments to NAHQ's posts. The campaign was designed to spark conversation, so let’s get one going!
  • Take The Power of Q to your leadership: For Quality to become a priority, it needs to be part of the conversations where priorities are set – in the C-suite, in the boardroom, in the budget meeting. Bring the message that Quality is critical to your Director. If you’re a Director, bring it to your VP. Or into the C-Suite. You could even leave a copy of the print ad on a leader’s desk with a note.
  • Be ready for what’s next for The Power of Q: NAHQ next, NAHQ’s annual multi-day virtual event that takes on the most important issues facing healthcare, is taking place Sept. 9-11. Be sure to register soon. It’s a great way to learn how Quality can continue play a big role in meeting our biggest challenges today and achieving our greatest goals tomorrow. You’ll take away tools to help you advance your career AND the Quality mission.

I have spent my entire career dedicated to doing all I can to ensure patients receive the very best care throughout their healthcare journey. When I became the President of the NAHQ Board of Directors, I knew I had a powerful forum to help spread the word that Quality & Safety are a vital component of delivering the best patient care.

With this new advertising campaign, I feel like now we all have a powerful tool to deliver that message in a meaningful and impactful way. Let’s go tell everyone about The Power of Q!
