Senior Director of Nursing - University of Kansas Health System

I am a healthcare leader with 30 years experience in leading teams in a variety of acute care settings. As the Senior Director of Nursing at an NCI-Comprehensive Cancer Center, my role is to ensure that healthcare excellence is delivered throughout the enterprise and across the continuum. This requires staff engagement and a culture that promotes open, respectful communication across all disciplines no matter job title. I have established mechanisms that support healthy environments so that quality and safety can be embedded at every touch point. Near misses are discussed openly with trust and respectful communication. It is understood that this is how we learn and improve as an organization. Establishing daily safety huddles with purposeful safety messaging has been an effective strategy in strengthening teamwork along with improving safety and quality. This strategy along with fostering a positive work environment has created a positive impact where teams can flourish.
