As a practicing Ob/Gyn physician for 12 years, I have focused on providing guideline based medical care to all of my patients. When I became the interim medical director of obstetrics four years ago, I was able to combine that focus with a desire to support not just my colleagues but our patients by standardizing care in the form of policies and protocols for critical clinical situations such as postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Through a partnership with all members of the clinical, quality and administrative staff, I was able to help with standardizing prevention and management of PPH, provide interactive education focused on our protocols and use the EMR to allow us to better identify at risk patients and order lifesaving medications when it matters most. Through these initiatives we were able to work together to improve patient care and outcomes.
