Energizing Direct Report Rounding: A Key Tool in High Reliability Organizing

We employ direct report rounding to improve staff engagement. We know that monthly direct report rounding with our employees leads to a better functioning work environment in which the team delivers safer, higher quality care, with decreased harm. Despite this practice being key to becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO) we experienced variable enthusiasm and quality in the practice of direct report rounding. We will show how the use of a survey to measure our employees perception of their experience with direct report rounding, gave us the data to inspire improved direct report rounding.

Tool: Direct Report Rounding Experience Survey

Problem: We employ direct report rounding to improve staff engagement which leads to safer, higher quality care, with decreased harm. Yet we find variable enthusiasm and quality in the practice of direct report rounding. How do we drive home the importance of this practice with our clinical managers?

Tool Selection: We chose a survey tool that would allow us to make correlations between the practice of direct report rounding as experienced by employees on teams, with their team's outcome measures related to employee experience, safety, and quality. (i.e. employee engagement scores, attendance, workplace safety, falls)

Usage: The Rounding Practice Survey is administered to our employees in our inpatient and outpatient facilities facilities to collect their perceptions of direct report rounding. These are correlated to the employee teams' measures on workplace safety, attendance, patient falls rate and overall hospital patient experience ratings.

Results: Our most recent survey showed departments with supervisors who are in the top 20% of providing high quality monthly rounding have statistically significant better outcomes across priority outcomes measures, when compared to supervisors who are in the bottom 20% of those who provide monthly rounding
