Reducing Cost of Care for Patients with Spinal Compression Fractures
For a total cost of care initiative, the Neurosurgery Department identified opportunities to reduce costs through improved use of the Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity (TLICS) Scale. This objective scale assesses morphology, neurologic involvement and posterior ligamentous complex and is performed at the time of compression fracture diagnosis in both inpatient and outpatient settings. There was a need to objectively score the fractures, which would then lead to standardized care across the system. The focus was on patients with scores of 1 or 2. Over 12 months, subsequent imaging studies for patients were reduced, resulting in significant cost savings.
