Integrating Quality in Operations: A Driver Diagram-Guided Approach for Opening Ambulatory Sites

Opening a new, state-of-the-art multispecialty ambulatory facility outside the medical center campus required coordinated multidisciplinary efforts to address quality operational challenges. A driver diagram guided the work and supported achievement of the project aims. Six drivers for a successful launch were identified: 1)readiness for outpatient procedures; 2)safe medication and vaccine management; 3)infection prevention and control; 4)blood, laboratory, and tissue certifications; 5)environmental, laser, and radiation safety; and 6)emergency response. Through structured planning and collaboration, readiness and opening milestones were achieved. Patient-centered care was provided to 34,025 patients within a six-month period, advancing organizational goals to expand specialty care access.
