Chaos to Coordination: Using Continuous Improvement to Optimize Patient-Centered Flow in the ED
The ED throughput initiative improved patient safety, patient experience, and operational efficiency by reducing wait times and length of stay in the ED by leveraging DMAIC continuous improvement methodology and HRO principles. By reducing delays, preventable harm was reduced, and rate of patients leaving before treatment was complete dropped significantly. Measurable clinical efficiency gains and a sustained improvement in patient experience scores as well as a renewed confidence in ED care by our community in the most highly populated area of our county with the highest health disparities was seen. Safety was hardwired with streamlined triage and redesign of care.
