Improving Geriatric Psychiatric Care Using Multisensory Nonpharmacologic Interventions
Geriatric psychiatric inpatients frequently experience anxiety, often managed with PRN medications that carry increased risks, including falls, sedation, and confusion. This quality improvement initiative introduced a multisensory room as a first-line, nonpharmacologic intervention, providing calming lighting, sounds, tactile objects, and comfortable seating to promote emotional regulation and autonomy. Implementation resulted in a 49% reduction in anxiety scores and a 39% decrease in PRN medication use, demonstrating safer, patient-centered care. Attendees will learn practical strategies to integrate multisensory interventions into inpatient behavioral health settings, reduce reliance on medications, and improve measurable outcomes in geriatric psychiatric care.
