Shaping Quality Leaders: Competency-Based Orientation Using the NAHQ Framework

The Quality Improvement (QI) Team at The Johns Hopkins Hospital identified significant variation in onboarding practices, resulting in inconsistent orientee preparedness and unclear expectations. A multidisciplinary workgroup conducted a gap analysis and applied Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles to develop a standardized orientation process aligned with the NAHQ Healthcare Quality Competency Framework. Key tools included a structured orientation guide, centralized resource repository, competency self-assessments, and standardized feedback mechanisms. Early results demonstrated improved orientee satisfaction, consistent preceptor assignment, and increased confidence locating departmental resources. This scalable framework demonstrates how improvement methods can strengthen workforce onboarding and operational reliability across healthcare quality teams.
