Effect of a Teaching Session on Nurse Leader’s Knowledge of Intentional Rounding
Leadership rounding can have a positive impact on patients and families while hospitalized. Rounding with a purpose can improve patient satisfaction.
Tool: The IBM SPSS Version 24 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) software will be used for statistical analysis of the data obtained on pretest and posttest responses. Descriptive statistics on participant demographic characteristics and test items will be analyzed.
Problem: Hospitalized, adult, medical-surgical patients satisfaction scores have declined on HCAHPS survey items and leadership nurse rounding has been identified as one strategy to improve nurse-patient communication and patient satisfaction scores.
Tool Selection: Mean, SD, and Min-Max values will be presented for the pretest and posttest. Tables will be constructed on demographic characteristics and test item statistics (descriptive and Correct Proportion Index and Point Biserial Index).
Usage: The tool was used to collect data before and after intervention specific to leader's comfort rounding on patients. Nurse leaders' knowledge of daily, intentional rounding differs when comparing before and after total test scores following implementation of an evidence-based teaching session.
Results: The paired t-test demonstrated a positive correlation that leaders improved rounding skills showed a positive improvement in HCAHP scores.
Problem: Having leaders round on the unit with specific objectives may result in improved management of diseases and a better perception of the hospitalization experience.
Measurement: paired t-test
Analysis: A before and after multiple choice test was offered to the same group of leaders. HCHAPs were compared to the intervention timeline.
Implementation: A training session for all leaders were offered during working hours. The team did a before and after study. Rounding was observed and protected time on leaders schedules were implemented to prevent barriers.
Results/Discussion: There was a positive correlation between leader rounding and ability to round with a purpose. HCAHP scored improved.
