Evaluating the Effectiveness of Education for Quality and Safety Improvement
This poster will display methods used by University of Michigan Health to evaluate the effectiveness of education provided to staff and faculty related to leading and improving quality and safety. Methods include applying Kirkpatrick's model and four levels of evaluation: reaction, learning, behavior and results. Collecting and analyzing education metrics improves decision-making on content, cadence, and instructional approaches, allowing the organization to continuously improve how it is equipping staff and faculty to lead and improve quality and safety.
Problem: This poster addresses how to best measure the effectiveness of education related to leading and improving quality and safety.
Measurement: Tools include standard class evaluations, dashboards, standard processes to review data, Excel and Tableau.
Analysis: Kirkpatrick's model for evaluation was applied in the development and ongoing improvement of a set of education metrics. The education evaluation methods evolved over time and included multiple PDCAs.
Implementation: While other healthcare quality professionals likely use evaluations that measure participant satisfaction, they may not be measuring learning, behavior changes or outcomes.
Results/Discussion: The UMH Quality department uses several levels of education evaluation metrics to continuously adjust and improve what classes and resources are offered, when, and how. This allows the organization to efficiently reach the most people with the right education at the right time.
